Underwater sightseeing in Belize (Los Angeles Daily News)
It was a dark, rainy, gray day. We don’t go for monochrome excursions during
our tropical adventures, so this kind of day was not acceptable. Nonetheless,
my two teenage children and I were going to make the best of our snorkeling
trip along the Belize Barrier Reef, the longest unbroken reef in the Western
Hemisphere.

Should I book my Belize snorkeling excursion “off” the ship for a better deal and better location?
Will I see plenty of exotic fish or JUST stingray and nurse sharks which I’ve already seen?
No no no! Do NOT book it on your own off the ship! As the other answerer said, the ship anchors out a couple miles and you have to take a tender to get to the port. This is a good half hour each way. Then you have to find a tour guide that is ready to leave on short notice. Then they have to take you out to the reef which is a good 45 min to an hour each way. You are just asking to miss the ship. Belize is not a good port to book your own excursions.
If you book through the ship, the tour boat will pick you up at the ship and take you directly to the reef, and then return you directly to the ship. You pay more for it but it is certainly worth it to not miss the ship departing!
As far as exotic fish goes, I don’t remember seeing many, and they don’t let you get too far from the boat, so you may be a little disappointed. I still enjoyed the trip though.
