Is belize safe to travel to?

So, the boyfriend and I wanted to take a vacation to belize but many people have told us that it’s not safe to travel to. I guess people kidnap and trade you i’ve herd? I’m not sure if they were being sarcastic, but It’s a beautiful place and I would love to go there. If anyone has ever traveled there, lemme know if it’s safe to travel just the two of us.
